The basic process is simple: vehicle detection → identity verification → access authorization → barrier opening → safe vehicle passage. Once the vehicle has cleared the access lane, the boom barrier automatically closes.

1. Vehicle Detection: How Does the System Detect a Vehicle?

Vehicle detection is the first step in an automatic barrier gate system. Inductive loop detectors remain a reliable solution for many permanent parking installations. Installed beneath the road surface, the loop detects changes in inductance caused by a vehicle and sends a signal to the barrier controller.

For projects where cutting the pavement is undesirable, radar-based vehicle detection can provide a flexible alternative. Radar can detect approaching vehicles without installing an underground loop and can also work with safety functions.

Video-based detection is another option, particularly when cameras are already part of the site's security infrastructure. However, cameras still require appropriate power and network connectivity, so they are not necessarily a completely wiring-free solution.

2. Vehicle Identification: Who Is Authorized to Enter?

After detecting a vehicle, the system determines whether it has permission to pass. License Plate Recognition is an increasingly common approach for parking and controlled-access facilities. A camera captures the license plate and compares it with an authorized vehicle list. If the plate matches, the access-control system can trigger the barrier to open.

Other credentials, including RFID tags, access cards, mobile credentials, or remote controls, can also be used depending on the project requirements.

3. Barrier Control and Safety

Once authorization is confirmed, the controller activates the motor and raises the boom. A reliable parking barrier gate must also protect vehicles and pedestrians during operation.

Common safety measures include vehicle detection loops, photoelectric sensors, obstacle detection, and automatic reversal. Dual-loop configurations can provide separate vehicle presence and safety detection, while anti-tailgating logic can help prevent unauthorized vehicles from following an authorized vehicle through the entrance.
